Why You Should Upgrade From Joomla! 1.5

There are many reasons why you should be upgrading your website from Joomla 1.5 and leaving the old Joomla behind. We're finding that more and more clients that we are working with need to now move away from the old legacy CMS and upgrade to the more current version.

This article goes through a few reasons why you should be upgrading to the latest version of Joomla!

Here are the top 5 reasons to migrate and upgrade from Joomla 1.5.

Security Vulnerabilities

From September of 2012, Joomla 1.5 no longer received support and updates. Migrating from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5 or 3.0 is vital to keep hackers out, minimise downtime and to keep your site secure. This allows Joomla 1.5 websites to have the potential to invite hackers in.

Consider asking yourself what would be better, suffering considerable downtime when your site gets hacked as your site is being migrated to the latest version of Joomla or spending the time now while your site is still up and running to safely migrate to the latest version without any downtime at all.

Extensions Support / Updated Extensions

Extensions are no longer developed for Joomla 1.5, so you’re putting your website at a disadvantage over the competitors. Do you want a site that is boring and out of date? Consider the migration a time to refresh and revamp your site. Support for Joomla 1.5 extensions is no longer available, which can lead to vulnerable or unstable extensions on your site.

Of course there are a handful of extensions that are still being developed for Joomla 1.5 but in reality, all the good ones are no longer supported. Additionally in version 3.5 you can now search for, and install, extensions right in the backend of Joomla!.

Greater Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Joomla!'s latest version is much more friendly with search engines, and allows for clearer indexing. These new search capabilities have been added and is much improved over Joomla 1.5. The internal search itself is very much improved making it possible to search for content within the site.

Support

Get up to date support from Joomla. With the guarantee of Joomla 3.5 as a long-term support release, you can be rest assured that you will have official Joomla support until 2015.  More and more resources and support tools for Joomla 1.5 are becoming obsolete making supporting them even harder.

One-Click Updates

Once you have migrated from 1.5 to 2.5 / 3.5, Joomla has incorporated a simple one click upgrade feature for future updates. Forget the hassle of the initial update/migration!
Once you've done the hard work now, the rest should be easy street and simple to do.

Key Thing to Keep In Mind

You may have noticed while reading this article that I didn't really mention upgrading your Joomla website but rather migrate your Joomla site. The move from Joomla 1.5 to 2.5 or later is a website migration and not a website upgrade.

The changes from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 2.5 / 3.5 were so substantial that a simple upgrade which so many of us are use to isn't possible. So keep that in mind when making the change.
